The world-renowned herbalist and healer Dr. Sebi was not shy in sharing his affection for the state of Florida and all it has to offer. He explained, “Every natural fruit in the world grows and can be found in Florida”.

Dr. Sebi was born as Alfredo Bowman on November 26, 1933 in the village of Ilanga in Spanish Honduras. It was only through fasting that he acquired his infamous name most people know him by today. Suffering from asthma, diabetes, obesity, and impotence, Dr. Sebi found western medicine to do nothing for him. His journey led him to an herbalist in Mexico that specialized in intercellular healing using cell foods. Embarking on a 90 day fast with herbal teas and water changed Alfredo Bowman’s life forever. A miracle occurred, with Dr. Sebi’s impotence and other ailments being completely eradicated.

Inspired by this experience, Dr. Sebi developed a unique approach and methodology to healing the body with herbs. This was brought into the mainstream when he was challenged by the New York Supreme Court for practicing medicine without a license. A 1980’s ad, claiming, “Usha Research cures AIDS, diabetes, blindness and more” sparked heated debate. When presenting in front of the court, Dr. Sebi was accompanied by 77 of his patients that he had cured. The evidence was indisputable and he won the case.

Dr. Sebi died on August 6, 2016, but his legacy and teachings will live on for eternity. Before his passing, Tommy Lockward had the unique opportunity to meet the man himself. The two formed a special student-teacher relationship and partook in the sacred sharing of plant medicines. Tommy, coming from Miami at the time, ignited Dr. Sebi’s passion for the healing soil found in Florida.

It was described that Florida is home to the Blue Vervain, which is an herb aiding in the detoxification of the body and keeps the nervous system healthy. While also found elsewhere, the plant thrives in Florida where it grows to be 6 feet tall. “The flower is always blooming in Florida.” Another hidden gem produced in Florida is the governor cherry, which are round, sweet, and very nutritious.

Dr. Sebi went on to list the natural mango, coconut, avocado, key lime, Seville orange, and custard apple all as being extremely well grown in the state. Part of this is due to Florida sharing the same geology as Africa, with the composition being rich in fertile nutrients.

“I would live in Florida. If I were to buy a house in the United States, it’d be in Florida…the only place. It’s pretty, the breeze, oh man. I head it’s the fountain of youth, and I believe it. “ Almost brought to tears, Dr. Sebi claimed he had never truly enjoyed a sunset, until he came to Miami. He also told a story about his breathtaking trips out to Key West for a “Craig Fish House” fish sandwich, back in his younger days.
